Well, more like Criterion Hung. Criterion just put eight Jackie Chan films on the Criterion Channel possibly the best looking of all the streaming channels out there. With the world being horrible, I thought a look at one of action cinema’s sweeter onscreen personas had a pleasing ring to it. I wish I could include all eight films, but there are only five days of the week. Right now, anyway. Today’s Film MY LUCKY STARS Plot This is a goofy-ass comedy and the greater nuance of its plot eludes me. It begins with Jackie Chan and his partner Yuen Biao chasing two Yakuza at an amusement park. Biao gets abducted so Chan gets help from the Five Lucky Stars, a group of idiotic wackos led by Sammo Hung, to help. Eventually they do - mostly Sammo Hung does - but first they have to fuck around being goofy for an hour, with a rather obnoxious amount of time dedicated to sexually harassing their female liaison, Baby. It’s not a woke film, even by 1985 standards. MY LUCKY STARS is the second in a series of films that I imagine are all filled with slapstick nonsense. I enjoyed the film a lot, but it’s a curious entry for Criterion’s Jackie Chan slate. Bolo Yeung is in it for a second, for all you BLOODSPORT fans. Chan’s Mental Age First of all, Jackie Chan is not in the film a whole lot. He opens it and then disappears until the one-hour mark. They even do the thing where he has a fight while wearing a mask, so it’s probably not Jackie Chan at all. The Five Lucky Stars stuff is pretty fun so you don’t think you miss him. But then he shows up and you feel the bask of a real movie star. Even if he is wearing the worst pair of jeans I’ve ever seen, he just brightens up the screen. Because the film isn’t focused on Chan, and because he offers a role of professional stability next to a group of goofballs, I’m putting Chan at 30 here. It’s nice to finally see him in a modern setting. This film doesn’t do a ton with it, but modern times match Chan. The clothes look more natural on him and it gives him more things to jump off of and/or use as weapons. Best Fight I don’t want my praise for Jackie Chan to overshadow how much I like Sammo Hung, who far and away has the film’s best fight. Chan does some good stuff, even if he offers little more than a cameo, but Hung has a fight with an eye-patched villain near the end that takes the cake. It’s not about flashy moves, either. Hung is just fun to watch. Obviously, his persona builds around being overweight. Though he’s honestly not all that heavy, his body does lend weight to his moves, which is then elevated by how remarkably fast he is. It’s a lot of fun to watch him go nuts on someone. Unlikeliest Weapon Chan tosses a boiling tea kettle at a bad guy, who catches it and immediately tosses it to his partner, severely burning them both. There’s another really fun bit where Chan fights two villains in an upside down room and uses a table stuck to the ceiling to his advantage in a cool way. Second Biggest Badass I’m afraid Chan is the second biggest badass in this one. Sammo Hung is the first. Craziest Stunt The film opens with Chan climbing all around a Ferris wheel, which is pretty nuts. But I was more impressed with a move which sees him somehow tumbling UP a set of stairs while avoiding blows from an opponent. The guy is amazing. An amiable buddy-buddy-just-plain-weird comedy offering, a follow up to WINNERS & SINNERS and following much the same mould. This time around the ensemble cast travel to Japan to outwit a criminal gang, cleverly located in an amusement park which makes a great backdrop for the action. Unfortunately, despite the kick-fest indicated by the trailer, action is exactly what MY LUCKY STARS is short of. It's a film of two halves. The first ten minutes and the final half an hour is one film; the hour in between is another. For the most part, the middle of the film is a meandering comedy film reuniting the jokers we all know and love; Kidstuff, Roundhead, Rawhide, Sandy, and Herb. The jokes are pretty childish but there are plenty, and a fair few hit home. It's likable enough but not exactly what action fans are looking for and it doesn't always help that the Chinese comedy is so different from what Western viewers are experienced with. However, I find the jokes improve on repeat viewing, especially the hilarious 'dinner' scene that makes fine use of the language barrier. Of the cast members, the funniest is Eric Tsang, playing the stupid one of the group and usually at the butt of everyone else's joke, although all of the actors get some nice scenes to the beginning and end of the film feature Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao engaged in some fine work, the martial arts battles. The film kicks off with a hilarious and exciting chase by car, complete with a far-fetched stunt and a battle with some ninjas. Movie heaven, to be exact. Then Biao and Chan disappear and Sammo is left to carry the can as both star and director, something he does with skill. However things get really exciting at the finale, where the good guys storm the amusement park and Jackie Chan goes into the House of Horrors to fight the of spooky shenanigans follow in an expertly shot sequence from Hung, who also directed, reminding me of FANTASY MISSION FORCE. Things culminate in a massive bust-up in which Jackie fights regular villain Dick Wei PROJECT A, Sammo fights a whole load of bad guys, and a female bodybuilder comes on the screen to make an impression. It's crazy and fun. My only complaint with the action is that it's sped-up, which I found really noticeable in this instance. The resulting movie is a strange combination, not one of the total classics from the decade like DRAGONS FOREVER or PROJECT A but still good fun if you're in the right mood.

The camaraderie between the characters, especially the group of friends and the two detectives, is one of the major highlights of the film features some impressive stunt work, which is not surprising given that Sammo Hung is known for his expertise in martial arts and action choreography. The fight sequences are fast-paced, with each member of the group getting ample screen time to showcase their unique set of skills. The film also features some memorable set-pieces, including a car chase through the streets of Hong Kong and a climactic battle in a deserted of the standout performances in the film is that of Japanese actress Michiko Nishiwaki, who plays the role of Tak, the main villain. Nishiwaki is a real-life martial artist and former bodybuilder, and her physical prowess is on full display in the film's fight scenes. She is a formidable opponent for the group of friends and puts up a tough fight against them throughout the highlight of the film is the humor, which is both slapstick and witty. The comedic scenes are well-timed and help to balance out the film's action-heavy sequences. The friendship between the group of childhood friends is also a major source of humor, with each character having their quirks and Lucky Stars is a fun and entertaining film that showcases the talents of its ensemble cast. The film's blend of action and comedy works well, and the camaraderie between the characters is infectious. The film is a great example of the Hong Kong action-comedy genre, and it is a must-watch for fans of martial arts films.
